CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

AUGUST 27

GARRISON, MINNESOTA

AFTERNOON

Jason wiped the blood from his eyes. He couldn’t see where Mary was hit but knew she had taken a bullet somewhere. He had trouble trying to keep them going through the forest, while clearing his eyesight.

“Mary? Are you okay?” Jason asked.

No response. He could feel her breathing behind him though, so she was still alive.

“Mary!” he shouted.

“Y-Yes,” stammered Mary.

“Are you okay?” he said.

“Shot in the arm. Fucking hurts,” Mary grunted.

Jason peered back at their attackers. He didn’t think they were giving pursuit through the forest, so he hoped they were in the clear for now. He had to find a safe place to stop and patch both of them up but didn’t want to stop just yet. They were still too close to Garrison and those assholes in the trucks could surely still hear the sound of the bike.

Just as Mary reached around to try and put pressure on Jason’s wound, he found a game trail. Thanking his good fortune, he turned south and hit the gas. He could make better time on the trail than snaking his way through the woods.

Knowing he had little time to spare, he resisted the urge to stop until they were well away from Garrison. He pushed the bike as fast as he could, as long as he could. Their direct threat was from the attackers and he needed to open up some space from them. He was weighing the delicate balance between safety from the shooters and the need to fix their wounds.

He felt Mary’s hand on his leg and could still feel her breathing behind him, so he took the chance on increasing the distance. He raced through the woods as fast as the bike would carry both of them. The little dirt bike was never made to carry two people with heavy packs, it was meant for one rider, doing cartwheels in the air, or some shit like that.

Feeling Mary’s hand loosening its grip on his leg, he slowed down and came to a stop. Turning off the bike, he looked behind him and saw that Mary had passed out, either from pain or blood loss. Looking at her, he was sure that she had lost a tremendous amount of blood.

Even though he had figured out what was happening to her, he was frantic. She was the love of his life and he loved her more today than he did twenty years ago when they were first married. She was his high school sweetheart and he’d known no other.

He tried to slide off the bike while at the same time holding her up but failed miserably. As he put his weight down on his injured leg, pain shot through his right side. He lost his grip on Mary and she fell to the ground with a thud.

How could he have let this happen to her? What the hell was he thinking? He should have left her at home and brought Steve with him. Frantic was quickly turning into panic.
